[Many inorganic hydroxides can be copolymerized to form heteropolyanions.] HPA 23 is one such, derived from tungsten and antimony; its constitution is ammonium 21-tungsto-9-antimoniate with a molecular ratio of 6800. This compound has been shown to inhibit reverse transcriptases in oncornaviruses and is active against many RNA and DNA viruses. [Similar heteropolyamines are active against rabies virus.] HPA 23 was found in one patient to have a half-life of <20 min and so was administered to 3 other patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex by slow infusion (200 mg in 250 ml isotonic glucose for 3 h per day for 15 days). In all 4 the inhibitor reduced replication of lymphadenopathy virus (LAV) which was isolated from all patients before treatment. During treatment platelet counts fell (but returned to normal afterwards), hepatic transaminase activities rose slightly but there was no renal toxicity.
