RATIONALE
Noninvasive ventilation is commonly used in conjunction with aerosol therapy to treat patients with respiratory diseases. There has been much clinical and academic interest on how to increase aerosol delivery during noninvasive positive pressure ventilation.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the incorporation of a 6–inch corrugated tube as a “reservoir” device, as well as nebulizer design in order to increase medication delivery in line with bi-level positive airway pressure (BIPAP).
METHODS
An in vitro model to simulate spontaneous breathing in a toddler was constructed for this study (BIPAP: 12/6, tidal volume 0.13 L). A full face BIPAP mask with the leak port on the mask closed was tightly strapped to the head of a manikin to achieve a leak less than 5 L/min.
