Researchers, including psychologists and mathematics educators, and lay people, including school teachers and administrators, hold conflicting beliefs about the nature of arithmetic expertise (e.g., Ginsburg, Klein, & Starkey, 1998). In this chapter, I describe two vastly different views of this expertise and then discuss how three critical components of this expertise (knowledge of addition combinations, strategies, and principles) develop.
