The aim of the study was to determine the effect of combined oral contraceptive (COC) on the coagulation system in healthy Albanian women. The study included 28 women between ages 23 and 47. The subjects had no history of thromboembolic disease. Laboratory assessments were performed before and after 2 month of treatment with ethinylestradiol 30μg and gestodene 75μg. Plasma levels of PT, APTT, factor V, factor VIII, fibrinogen, Protein C, D-dimer and AT III were evaluated. Comparison of the values of these parameters before and after treatment, showed that concentrations of fibrinogen, Protein C, Factor VIII and D-dimer were significantly higher after 2 month of treatment compared to the baseline. The level of AT III was significantly lower after treatment. There was no significant difference in the level of factor V, PT and APTT. Changes in haemostatic system during COC use might increase the risk for thrombotic situations.
