简介
While current treatments for burn-related infections occlude wounds, gauze and similar materials are not biodegradable and thus necessitate repeated replacement. In solution blow spinning (SBS), biodegradable polymer solutions are sprayed with an airbrush onto a wound. Here, we adapt SBS to create antimicrobial dressings by combining a blend of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA/PEG) with silver ions (Ag+), an antimicrobial agent. PLGA/PEG/Ag dressings present numerous advantages over conventional approaches: (1) Minimal wound contact for decreased likelihood of pathogen transport. (2) Intrinsic adhesive properties for elimination of an additional layer of skin-irritating adhesive or gauze. (3) An antimicrobial agent in Ag+ that carries a relatively low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC).
