Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is responsible for an average of 4.5 million visits annually to physicians' offices, emergency departments, and outpatient clinics. However, there have been few studies using national data on the costs of treating CAP. Without such data, it is difficult to assess whether new therapies and treatment strategies are needed to improve patient outcomes. We conducted a retrospective analysis based on national incidence data and paid claims data for patients treated for CAP to assess the frequency of services rendered and costs to the health-care system. Records were selected for the study based on a primary diagnosis of CAP according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision.
