Increased levels of muscle specific proteins such as creatine kinase (CI<) and myoglobin in the blood have been used to assess muscle damage. Studies have shown that exercise consisting of maximal eccentric actions, where muscles are lengthened during force generation, produces damage to muscle tissue (1, 2.4, 5). There is a large variability in CI< response among subjects (4, 13, 15). For example, we found from data pooled for 59 nonweight trained male students that peak CI< levels after performance of 24 maximal eccentric actions of the elbow flexors ranged from 96 to 30,810 IU.
