The search for arylation methods is an attractive field for synthetic and mechanistic studies.* 1
Recent research efforts have focused, mainly on the use of organometallic compounds, among which arylpalladium species, 2 arylbismuth pentavalent derivatives, 3and aryllead triac-etates4 are particularly important. Most of these studies have been directedtoward C-arylation reactions, and IV-arylation has remained relatively unexplored. IV-Arylazoles are significant compounds due to their biological activity. For example, some IV-arylimidazoles are useful as phosphodiesterase III inhibitors. 5 A num-ber of IV-arylpyrroles and N-arylpyrazoles have antiinflammatory activity. 6 Both IV-arylimidazolesand N-arylpyrazoles bearing suitable polyhydroxylic side chains lower blood LDL-cholesterol by inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, 7 andl-(polyfluorophenyl) imidazoles have po-tential application as inhibitors of other enzymes …
