James Joyce (1882-1941) is a significant writer in Irish literature. He is a poet as well as revolutionary and visionary writer. He is the most original realistic writer of the twentieth century. His fame stems from his two great novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Ulysses (1922) which are given special attention of the critics. His novels depict the most common features of the society both politically and socially which reflect the nature of the Irish society. Joyce is well known of his unique style which distinguishes him from the other writers of his age. His critical abilities in literature enable him to use different modern techniques in his writings. He modifies the traditional techniques so that they can suit the spirit of the modern age. The aim of this research is to shed light on one of Joyce's modern techniques which is called stream of consciousness that he uses in his novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in which this technique reflects a special side of Joyce's personal life.
