The variations in brain H., O uptake in experimental rabbits was similar to that seen in control animals. The brain uptake of both glucose analogues was similarly affected in hypoxic and/or hypercapnic rabbits, as illustrated in Table 1. The BUI values for 14C 2-deoxy-D-glucose and 14C 3-O-methyl-D-glucose were significantly reduced as compared to control values when the arterial level of po, was lowered to 10 to 15 mm Hg (SAO., 10 to 15%) and the pCO, was increased to 100 mm Hg. Such an effect was not seen in mild-moderate hypoxia and hyperoxia. The systemic blood pressure vari-ability observed in severely hypoxic animals had no significant effect on the uptake of either 14C 2-deoxy-D-glucose or 14C 3-0-methyl-D-glucose.
