Zygomycosis encompasses a spectrum of infections caused by Zygomycetes, a class of fungi that produce predominantly aseptate or pauciseptate, wide, irregularly branching ribbon-like hyphae and reproduce sexually by the formation of zygospores [1]. Zygomycetes fungi are further classified into two orders, Mucorales and Entomophthorales, which produce distinct patterns of clinical infection (Fig. 1). Fungi belonging to the order Mucorales are angiotropic, cause tissue infarction, and are associated with disseminated and frequently fatal infections, especially in immunocompromised hosts [2]. In contrast, fungi of the order Entomophthorales are uncommon pathogens typically restricted to tropical areas that produce chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous infections that rarely disseminate to internal organs [2].
