MATERIALS AND METHODS

Morphological counts and measurements followed Kullander (1986) and Kullander and Nijssen (1989); all measurements were taken using digital callipers to the nearest 0.1 mm. Fin ray, scale, and gill raker counts were taken using a dissecting microscope. Scale row nomenclature followed Kullander (1996) and López-Fernández and Taphorn (2004), in which scale rows above the lateral line are labeled E1, E2, etc., moving dorsally and below the lower lateral line are labeled H1, H2, etc., moving ventrally. Vertebral counts were made using digital x-rays and include the last halfcentrum. All counts are expressed as the observed count followed by the number of specimens exhibiting this value in parentheses. Diagnostic coloration characteristics (eg, suborbital stripe, lateral band, caudal spot) are named as given in Kullander (1986) and are illustrated in Figure 1. Lateral bars are …
