β-Amino R-hydroxy acids are important components in a variety of biologically interesting compounds. 1 For instance, it has recently been found that some inhibitors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), such as microginin, KR1 1314, and KR1 1230, 2 contain β-amino R-hydroxy acids in their structure. These molecules are useful agents in hypertension and congestive heart failure therapy. Other biologically active molecules containing this kind of structure are KN1-272 and KN1-227 tripeptides that are highly potent HIV-1 protease inhibitors and are promising candidates as selective anti-AIDS agents. 3
