Among discotics, triphenylene derivatives have great potential in supramolecular and material chemistry. These derivatives often form columnar mesophases and thus are promising candidates for various applications such as organic light-emitting diodes, organic field-effect transistors, organic photovoltaic cells and gas sensors. However, the synthesis of these triphenylene derivatives from terphenyls on a large scale using conventional oxidizing agents is inconvenient, since these agents are insoluble in most of the organic solvents.
