Cadmium is a ubiquitous heavy trace metal toxicant and is well known as an industrial pollutant. Due to long biological half-life and slow excretion, it accumulates in the kidney, liver and lungs and causes numerous toxicological effects viz., anemia, emphysema, renal disturbances, Itai-Itai, cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, cancer, osteomalacia and osteoporesia. Cadmium-binding protein, metallothionein, plays potential role in the reproductive toxicology of cadmium. Exposure to cadmium can cause both immunosuppression and immunoenhancement responses in animals and humans. Cadmium exerts effects on the hypothalamicpituitary-testicular axis function, and a disruption of the regulatory mechanisms of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
