The generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) has emerged as a significant challenge to sustainable development in many countries. Pyrolysis, a thermal process, offers a promising green solution by converting MSW into biochars. This mini-review summarizes recent studies on the physicochemical properties and applications of biochars derived from MSW. Potential uses of MSW-derived biochars include environmental remediation, soil amendment, and carbon sequestration. However, the diverse properties of MSW-derived biochars across studies highlight the importance of characterizing these materials before their application for different purposes. Nevertheless, MSW-derived biochars present an attractive and promising avenue for sustainable waste management, with the potential to deliver multiple environmental and economic benefits.
