VALUE-BASED MEDICAL EDUCATION Health systems are valuing the development of personal characteristics among their workers. Compassion, resilience, inclusion, and equity, among others, are being recognized as necessary for facilitating effective care delivery and leadership. While mastery of anatomy and pharmacology are necessary for clinicians, clinical expertise is far from the only attribute needed to be an excellent physician. Value-based medicine is being taught in a systematic way, as leaders recognize the importance of these qualities for future healthcare providers. Surgeons, in particular, are placing importance on one value, which appears antithetical to the confident surgeon stereotype: humility.
