Computers are ubiquitous and sophisticated machines, but some tasks remain best performed by humans. Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) was initially introduced as an internal crowdsourcing platform to address iterative, human intelligence-requiring tasks, but the potential to expand this platform was quickly obvious. Using the MTurk system, “Requesters” can engage “Workers,” who function as contractors to complete described tasks. The ability to recruit large numbers of “Workers” at a relatively lower cost and with greater ease has made the Amazon MTurk platform attractive to researchers and deploying surveys via MTurk has become an established method to quickly recruit subjects for certain types of human subject research, but ethical principles must be upheld.
