Metals are present in every facet of human existence and many are even necessary to support life. Some metals, however, are extremely toxic, thus it is important to be able to quickly and accurately determine the concentrations of metals present in solutions. One method used to determine the concentrations of metals in solution is through the use of Near-Infrared (NIR) fluorescence. Cyanine and squaric acid dyes represent two important classes of organic dyes due to their ease of modification allowing solubility, absorption and emission wavelengths, and conjugatability to be adjusted. The tunability of these dyes allows for the design and synthesis of probes which can be used to accurately and selectively determine the concentration of a given metal even in a solution containing multiple metal species.
