China has announced plans to invest some US $2.5 billion in generating renewable energy, treating garbage, and reducing carbon over the next 5 years. Beijing has also committed to more than doubling the nation's renewable energy by 2020. China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation (CECIC), a state-owned enterprise, will under-take the announced investment in order to take advantage of the recently enacted Renewable Energy Law of China. This allows compa-nies to set higher prices for power generated from renewable sources than for the coal-generated power that currently supplies 75-80% of China's electricity.
