RATIONALE
Tracheostomies are utilized to facilitate ventilation weaning in COVID-19 patients. Exploring real-world outcomes associated with this clinical practice will help us optimize management strategies of critically ill patients with COVID-19.
METHODS
We performed a retrospective single-system multi-center, observational study. Our study surveyed the clinical characteristics, complications, and outcomes of tracheostomy in a cohort of 44 tracheostomized COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care unit of Mount Sinai Morningside and West from March 2020 to May 2021.
RESULTS
Most patients received late tracheostomy (≥ 14 days from intubation)(n= 34, 77.3%) compared to early tracheostomy (< 14 days)(n= 10, 22.7%). The mean time to tracheostomy was 20.7±8.6 days.
