Rinderpest recurred in Nigeria in the second half of 1980 after an absence of six years. This epidemic, which entered the country from an outbreak in Niger, was still present in western Nigeria at the beginning of 1983, when a new epidemic which began in the Sudan in August 1982 entered the country from Chad through Cameroon. After an infected herd was impounded in the first week of January 1983, Cameroon closed the border with Chad. However, within two weeks infected cattle were found 350 kilometres within Nigeria, and by early February the disease had spread widely in Borno and Gongola States which together support more than four million cattle. By the end of February there were 20 main and several minor foci of infection involving over 30 000 cattle with 10 000 sick and a case mortality rate of more than 70%.
