To counteract the dramatic increase in antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens, many countries, including China, have banned the use of antibiotic-supplemented feed for farming animals. However, the exact consequences of this policy have not been systematically evaluated. Therefore, Salmonella isolates from farms that ceased using antibiotics 1–5 years ago were compared with isolates from farms that continue to use antimicrobials as growth promotors. Here, we used whole-genome sequencing combined with in-depth phenotypic assays to investigate the ecology, epidemiology, and persistence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella from animal farms during the withdrawal of antibiotic growth promotors.
