For individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), deficits in social communication are a core area of impairment, and thus a critical domain for intervention. Developing competent social behavior is a complex learning process, comprised of a variety of individual skills. Curriculum-based assessments provide an evaluation of skills an individual has already acquired and also identify areas for improvement. These tools are often directly tied to curricula for building these skills in children with ASD, with the goal of helping children proceed through a developmental sequence and build progressively more sophisticated social behavior. This chapter identifies 18 curriculum-based assessments that include a social skills component for teaching young children (defined as birth through 10 years of age) with ASD.
