• Fear generalization is tightly linked to perceptual discrimination levels in healthy humans.• Peripheral, autonomic fear responses are more sensitive and accurate than conscious evaluations.• This quantitative paradigm can be used in future work to examine the neural basis of fear generalization and abnormalities in the mediating mechanisms.
