Research on plantain at IITA has since 1976 been supported by the Belgian Administration for Development Cooperation (BADC) and, from 1981 to 1985, by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). As a result of a strategic review at IITA, plantain was in 1986 included among the mandated crops in the IITA core research program. All plantain research is performed on the 80-hectare experimental farm of the Onne high-rainfall station near Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
