The immigrant paradox refers to surprising data indicating that as immigrant generations go by, and as immigrant individuals acculturate to the host country, their developmental outcomes deteriorate. In this chapter, we attempt to provide some understanding of the immigrant paradox during childhood and adolescence, specifically in the areas of risk behaviors (eg, illicit substance and alcohol use and abuse, sex risk behaviors including sex with multiple partners and lack of contraception, and delinquency) and academic performance (eg, achievement, attitudes, and behaviors). We chose these two areas of behavior because of the extensive research done in each domain in North America and Europe, and also because these two areas are highly predictive of successful pathways into adulthood (Masten, Burt, & Coatsworth, 2006).
