A method Is described for thequantitative determination of alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEO) In synthetic surfactants and In wastewaters. Gaseous stripping Into ethyl acetate Is employed to extract the analytes from wastewater samples. Normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HP-LC) using bonded-phase amlnosllica columns allows the separation and quantitative determination of oligomeric APEO. For the major oligomers relative deviations range from 2 to 10%. Estimated limits of detectionfor individual oligomers are 1 pg/L, and recovery of total APEO is 87%. Reversed-phase HPLC Is applied as a complementary analytical tech-nique particularly for the determination of the alkyl substitu-ents and as a rapid screening method.
