Like the obesity epidemic, the understanding of adipocyte maturation and hypertrophy processes is expanding. White adipose tissue function requires coordination of multiple regulatory signaling pathways that culminate in the formation of cytosolic lipid droplets. Adipocyte hypertrophy is triggered by caloric intake excess and is sustained by the modulation of expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism, energy homeostasis and inflammation. Owing to recent advances in epigenomics, increasing interest is focused on clarifying how different environmental cues can epigenetically reprogram adipocyte fate and function, mainly by altering DNA methylation and histone modification patterns.
