Methods: Treatment naïve patients with chronic HBV infection who had undergone liver biopsy were enrolled in the study. Demographic factors, history and clinical findings were recorded. Hemogram, biochemical parameters including liver function tests were assayed in all cases. HBeAg status was assessed in all cases. Quantification of HBsAg and HBV-DNA was done in serum using chemiluminescence immunoassay and real time PCR assay respectively. Liver biopsy specimens were examined for histological staging and grading (Modified HAI system) as well as immune-staining for HBsAg. The pattern of tissue HBsAg expression was noted and also semi-quantitatively estimated. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between variables.
