Cardiac MR (CMR) imaging is used for a variety of indications, ranging from suspected cardiomyopathy to evaluation of congenital heart defects [1-3]. At our institution, these examinations are monitored and tailored by physicians, with the potential to become lengthy and resource intensive. CMR examinations have come under particular scrutiny in the setting of rising health care costs [4, 5]. Although quality improvement initiatives typically focus on care improvement, waste reduction is an alternative quality measure [6-9]. On a clinical CMR imaging service, waste takes the form of added scan time due to extraneous pulse sequences, repetition of sequences not necessary for accurate diagnosis, or any extension of the examination time without added diagnostic value [7].
