Results
Carbon ion beams were more effective than X-rays and the RBE values were more than 1.0, but the values varied according to the tumors and endpoints. The incidences of apoptosis 6 hours after 0.25–1 Gy irradiation were 5–49/high power field (HPF) by carbon ion and 3–9/HPF by X-ray in ependymoblastoma. Those values were 1.2–4/HPF by carbon ion and 0.4–1/HPF by X-ray in glioblastoma. RBE-ap values were 6.3 and 6.1 for ependymoblastoma and glioblastoma, resperctively. DTs of ependymoblastoma following 3Gy/1–3fr and 1.5 Gy/1–3fr irradiation were 61–58 and 43–37 days for carbon ion, and 36–32 and 29–27 days for X-ray, respectively. DTs of glioblastoma following 3Gy/1–3fr and 1.5 Gy/1–3fr irradiation were 9.3–7.6 and 8.8–7.8 days for carbon ion, and 8.0–5.0 and 7.5–5.3 days for X-ray, respectively.
