Quorum sensing (QS) is a technique that allows bacteria to detect population density and control gene expression simultaneously. Many activities critical for microbial pathogenicity, such as sporulation, biofilm formation and enzyme secretion or membrane vesicles, have been found to be regulated by QS, according to Krzyzek. 71 This has resulted in the development of the concept of anti-QS therapy, also known as quorum quenching (QQ), and the possibility of using it to combat certain diseases. Many publications in recent years have described promising results, indicating that co-treating bacteria with antibiotics can reduce pathogenicity and make eradication easier.
