简介
The aim of this project is to determine the relationship between a history of childhood emotional abuse and shame reactivity/regulation in adults in the lab. Increased shame has been suggested to contribute to mental health issues in adults (Denson, 2012; Velotti et al., 2017). It is suggested that a history of childhood maltreatment (eg, emotional abuse) may increase shame intensity and use of maladaptive emotion regulation use (ie, rumination, non-acceptance of emotions, and experiential avoidance) in adults (Cândea and Szentágotai-Tătar; 2017; Weissman et al., 2019). However, this hypothesis has yet to be tested in the lab. This study will investigate adults’ shame reactivity in response to an inevitable failure situation and their emotion regulation use in the lab, as predicted by a history of childhood emotional abuse. Using a novel shame induction paradigm (inevitable failure situation) that is designed to be amenable to assess subsequent emotion regulation use, the study will investigate Aversive Cognitive Perseveration (ACP; Naragon-Gainey et al., 2017), including rumination, non-acceptance on emotions, and experiential avoidance, with respect to regulation of induced shame of the failure situation.
