Purpose

To examine the associations of physical activity with disease-free survival of breast cancer in women diagnosed with Stage 0–IIIA breast cancer and enrolled in the Health, Eating, Activity, and Lifestyle (HEAL) Study.

Methods

At baseline (6+/-2 months post-diagnosis), 800 women completed interview-administered questionnaires which included information on year before diagnosis physical activity levels, physical activity levels at baseline, and health history. Body weight and height were measured at the baseline visit. During the two year follow-up, 732 (91.5%) women experienced a disease-free survival, 35 (4.4%) women were diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer or new breast primary, and 41 (5.1%) women died of breast cancer.
