PURPOSE: Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), a pulmonary vasodilator, has demonstrated beneficial effects in improving oxygenation among the ARDS population. However, the data regarding the extent to which the drug impacts hospital outcomes is conflicting. Our study explores nitric oxide therapy's effects based upon its initiation time.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective multi-center study analyzing COVID-19 patients admitted to the Mayo Clinic Enterprise health system between March 2020 and June 2022 who received iNO and were intubated during the same stay. Data were extracted from the Society of Critical Care Medicine VIRUS COVID-19 registry by automated data pull and retrospective chart review.
