The application of biometric techniques to serological data from the two-dimensional microneutralization method for aphthovirus strain differentiation is described. The concept of critical r values (the highest value of r that is distinguishable from 1 for a given number of replicates at a particular probability) is advocated to take into account the intrinsic variation of the tests.
