Reconciling the conflicting rights and demands of women’s productive and reproductive roles poses an increasing challenge to health policy formulation. Conflicts between these roles are intensified by rapid development and social change. International conventions concur that women have a right to offer optimum nutrition to their babies through breast-feeding and that babies have a right to be breast-fed. Simultaneously, women are entitled to seek gainful employment. For many, furthermore, employment is essential to the economic survival of their families. It is essential that a false dichotomy not be permitted to arise between these various rights.
