We previously reported a new method for measurement of the optical properties of osseous tissue in vitro and in vivo, using pulsed-laser time-resolved spectroscopy system. In addition to this study, we applied mathematical technique based on a photon diffusion equation of Patterson et al. to evaluate optical absorption coefficient (μa) and scattering coefficient (μs') from time resolved waveforms of 10 mm thick blocks of bovine cortical bone, trabecular bone, and surrounding tissue. The photons emitted from a pulsed laser light source were received by the picosecond optical oscilloscope after passing through the sample, and were accumulated and recorded. Then, we fitted these wave forms to above mentioned equation (Fig. 1, Table 1).
