Rationale
Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent in highlander and is associated with adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. Access to therapies for SDB is not widely available, leaving large segments of highland populations at risk for cardiometabolic morbidity. Sleeping on an incline can reduce gravitational forces on the upper airways, improve ventilation/perfusion matching and mitigate nocturnal hypoxemia and SDB.
Objective
To examine the acute effects of sleeping on a 15 degree incline compared to the usual flat posture on SDB severity as indicated by mean nocturnal oxyhemoglobin saturation (SPO2) and the frequency of disordered breathing episodes in native highlanders.
Methods
