As has long been observed there is no single, inclusive and comprehensive profession of psychotherapy. This differs markedly from other established professions such as medicine and law, engineering and accounting, nursing and ministry. Perhaps even more than professional background, therapist’s theoretical approach to clinical practice is a decisive facet in defining a psychotherapist’s identity, and those theoretical approaches are also very diverse. Therapists’ professional backgrounds and theoretical approaches are both characterized by multiplicity and diversity, but the picture that emerges is further complicated by the fact that those professional characteristics are not fully independent of each other.
