OR OVER 2 DECADES specialized neonatal care has supported the health care needs of vulnerable newborn infants. Many strides have been made to lower the age of viability to at least 24 weeks' gestation" and increase the very low birth weight or micropremie's (< 1,000 grams) survival to better than 80%“in many instances. But what strides have we made in caring for the parents? Since 1987 I have been privileged to follow families of infants discharged from the newborn spe-cial care or intensive care unit. From these parents, I have come to realize that often they suffer iatrogenic complications or psy-chologic side effects of their infant's hospi-talization. This article will address the concerns that parents (mother, father, or both) have expressed about their infants who required neonatal intensive care, as well as clinical implications for nurses working with these families.
