RESULTS

Two of the 8 patients recovered within 48 hours, demonstrated by increasing urine output with a decrease in creatinine levels and normalization of potassium levels, without need for further treatment. The remaining 6 patients did not improve; 4 died and 2 were transferred for palliative care to the central municipal hospital with signs of pulmonary edema. All 3 of our patients with pulmonary involvement died while undergoing mechanical ventilation. The comparison of the clinical characteristics between those who improved and those who died is shown in the Table.

Comparing survivors with those who did not improve, it seems that several clinical characteristics of crush injury were associated with poor prognosis, although all inferences should be taken with doubt: crush injury to the chest; anuria, as opposed to olyguria; developing compartment syndrome and undergoing surgical intervention; and longer …
