A 6-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with diarrhoea and melaena. He was clinically septicaemic and hypotensive and developed rapidly progressive multiorgan dysfunction. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics and institution of full intensive care, he died six hours later. Blood cultures taken at presentation revealed the gramnegative bacillus Burkholderia cepacia to be the cause of his septicaemia.
