Dr Laan was the head of the department of Sexology and Psychosomatic Gynecology at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands. She was not only a researcher in the field of sexology and sexual health, but also a therapist specialized in the treatment of traumarelated, disease-related, and iatrogenic sexual dysfunction. She was a passionate advocate for sexual gender equality, with a specific focus on how gender inequality impacts female sexual health and well-being. She was a scientistpractitioner at heart.

Dr Laan graduated in Psychology, Cum Laude, at the University of Amsterdam in 1988, followed by a pioneering doctoral thesis, for which she also received the Cum Laude distinction, at the same institute in 1994.
