This special issue is devoted to elucidating momentous contributions to international Marxian political economic debate by Japanese Marxist economist Kozo Uno. To be sure, Uno’s work remains largely unheralded in Western academies and Marxist debate circles notwithstanding his crucial intervenentions on abiding questions of the Marxist research program. Part of this unfortunate absence derives from language barriers and, hence, the relative insulation of Japanese academia from global debate. Yet, in Japan, by the early 20th century, Marxism had emerged “as a virtual synonym for social science” to make groundbreaking contributions to Marxist theory (Barshay 2004, 50).
