The compilation of various ethnopharmacological surveys worldwide indicates that over 50 000 plants have evident nutritional and therapeutic properties. Around 80% of human beings have used some at least once in their lifetime to deal with their health problems (1). Rarely one plant is used for a single specific disease. Often, the same plant has many indications that can even be contradictory from a pharmacological point of view. It is not surprising to find the same herb used to treat both schizophrenia and depression. However, according to pharmacological principles, schizophrenia is linked to an excess of dopamine, while Parkinson’s disease is associated with a dopamine deficit in the brain.
