Imidazopyridine is one of the important fused bicyclic heterocycles and it is recognized as a "drug prejudice" scaffold due to its wide applications in medicinal chemistry. A variety of ways to synthesize imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines have been reported and many approaches are devoted to the functionalization of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines. In this study, we have reported an efficient synthesis of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives using substituted 2-aminonicotinic acid and chloroacetaldehyde as a starting material in the presence of water as a green solvent under microwave irradiation with an excellent yield (92-95%) in a short time (30 min). The reaction has been optimized completely in a green environment without using a toxic catalyst and hazardous solvents.
