Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have been largely established during this era, because of their flexibility. Now a days, IEEE 802.11 has become the prevailing WLANs protocol. This thesis, especially focuses on the WLANs, IEEE 802.11 standard. IEEE 802.11 prescribes the procedures at Physical (PHY) and MAC layer, which are related to the DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) model that are developed in MAC of the IEEE 802.11 standard. Further, we also describe the main communication standards presented by IEEE 802.11. Moreover, we also discussed the basics of Point Coordination Function (PCF) and Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF) that are described by the IEEE 802.11 standard. Also described the details of Inter frame Space (IFS) and channel access mechanism in distributed coordination function.
