COPD prevalence in the US is primarily based on national surveys. We conducted a study of the prevalence and impact of COPD using the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey in 13,887 NC adults. An optional COPD module was added to the survey. COPD prevalence was assessed by asking:“Have you ever been told by a doctor or healthcare provider that you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, or chronic bronchitis?” Five other questions assessed use of breathing tests for diagnosis, quality of life, acute care visits, and use of respiratory medications. The crude and age adjusted prevalence of COPD were 6.2%(SE 0.28) and 5.7%(SE 0.26). As expected the prevalence increased with age, the highest rate in 65− 74 yrs− old (13.7%, SE 0.89).
